Closed Snow/IceState of Emergency Issued on 1/14/2024 and National Weather Service Forecast: Jefferson County EMA Overview: The passage of an Arctic front is expected to bring wintry precipitation into central Alabama through Tuesday morning. This will be followed by a period of bitter cold conditions through the middle of the week. Some light wintry precipitation is already working in to northwest portions of central Alabama at this time. Changes from previous forecast: The Winter Weather Advisory was expanded through much of central Alabama (minus the southeast areas). Winter impact graphics adjusted slightly. Highlights: Wintry Precipitation: Where: All but the southeast part of central Alabama. When: Beginning tonight in the far northwest, and spreading slowly southward thereafter. Wintry mix will end by late Tuesday morning. Threats: A wintry mix of snow; sleet, and freezing rain in the Winter Storm Warning area. Light amounts of sleet or freezing rain in the Winter Weather Advisory area. Impacts: Potential for slippery roads due to accumulations of ice or snow. Hazardous travel most likely in the far north. Bitterly Cold Temperatures: Where: All of central Alabama When: Monday night through Thursday morning Threats: A long-duration cold wave with a hard freeze; wind chill values as low as the single digits below zero.
